Recipe – Flipped Bitches

broodjeFeel like having a nice cheap snack that you can prepare for yourself and the kids within less than an hour? Don’t want to toss that dry old bread away just yet? Well, how about some “wentelteefjes” (roughly translated it actually means flipped bitches, hence the title yo)?? Kids of all ages love them and the house smells soooo good once you’ve baked these lil bitches up.

Flipped bitches are great for breakfast, lunch or as a snack. They are quite filling, though. But they are delicious!

It is lots of fun to make these together with your kids, that’s how easy they are to make. When I was a little girl I loved making them together with my Dutch dad. He learned the recipe from his mom, my grandma, when he was younger and so on. You can call it a family recipe, if you will. It is quite traditional, I guess.

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of brown bread
  • brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 250 ml milk
  • 1 egg
  • 40 gr butter or oil

Also needed:

  • A bowl
  • a frying pan

How to do it:

  1. Stir up the egg in a bowl and add the cinnamon, the sugar and the milk with it. Stir till it becomes one nice light brown mixture.
  2. Dip the slices of bread into the bowl one by one and stack the soaked slices of bread on a (deep) plate.
  3. If there’s still some mixture in the bowl, pour all of it over the pile of soaked slices.
  4. Leave the bread alone for about 4 minutes to absorb the mixture.
  5. Meanwhile you can heat up the frying pan.
  6. Bake the slices one by one for about 4 minutes a piece.
  7. Flip each slice of bread in the pan from time to time, so both sides became a nice golden color.
  8. Stack the baked “flipped bitches” on a plate and serve with some powdered sugar, maple syrup or just the way they are.

Tips & variations:

  • Instead of brown bread, you can use all sorts of sliced bread. For instance; try some raison bread instead, it’s really tasty!
  • Lactose intolerant? Use water.
  • You could serve the “flipped bitches” with cheese, ham or fruits.
