Total nerd moment here

What defines a computer nerd? Is it a person who enjoys spending most of their time behind a computer or similar device. (I concider the modern mobile phones as mini computers, considering the fact that they provide the user with more functions like internet, programs to keep you connected with social media etc. More than a phone that offers abilities other than the ability to call and send out a text message, like a Nokia Banana.

Is a nerd always some computer  lover, who reaches climax when they discover new gadgets? Especially when these new gadgets are high tech almost sci-fi like props  inspired by the comics or cartoons or other sci-fi media you used to idolize as a kid… Stuff which you always hoped would become real one day. Like a refridgerator with a huge touchscreen panel (Total Recall 2012 sure made me hyped for that). Imagine that; not an Iphone but an Ifridge. Tee-hee. OMG, I guess I’m a nerd.

It used to be uncool to be considered a nerd. Back when it wasn’t as common to walk around with a mini-computer in your pocket… But being a geek these days isn’t considered a bad thing anymore. Everyone is a little geek these days to a certain degree. Still… Compared to the regular noobs on this planet, a nerd knows their way around with certain utlities. You own a smartphone, a laptop and at least know how to access the internet. You managed to find the blog you are reading this second. Reading my entire brainfart on being a geek and my adoration for gadgets and computers with their fascinating operating systems makes you a little geekier 😛

But despite all of that; There are to this day, (to my shock and not including third-world-country inhabitants), people who have no idea how a computer works. And I’m talking about young people, born around the area the world digitalized in rapid speed. Young people, who had to deal with computers at school, when they’re at work or at home.

People, like some friends of mine. My best friend, for example. She had a computer fobia, so she claimed. She was always scared she’d press a wrong button and never had a computer in her own house up untill 2 years ago. Things like the internet scared her, it still does to a certain degree. I don’t judge her for it but it does make me chuckle when she asks me why her screen is tilted and how to fix it. (alt+ctrl+arrowkey).

I’ve noticed that older people (like my mom who is retired) share that same “fear”. There are exceptions, of course. There are older people out there who either were geeks themselves growing up or became geeks at an older age. Like my mom; she had the luck that she had geeks surrounding her throughout her life. (Geeks like my sis and me and a whole lot of geeky uncles)

My uncle is a complete computer geek. He fascinated me with all the stuff he could do with any random computer or machine. Whether there was a hardware malfunction or a software error, he knew how to fix almost anything. And otherwise he’d just keep trying until he could solve the matter anyway. And I figured at a young age (9 or something) that I’d want to know at least half of what my uncle knows about computers.

(<– An image like this makes me all tingly inside XD) And it still feels kind of cool now to be able to grab a screwdriver, unscrew the scews of a desktop to replace certain hardware. It’s cool to be able to fix certain software issues without the help of others. And there’s google these days, so you can just look it up and see if there are any other gifted computer geeks who had to fix a similar situation with their own computer.

Ah yeah…

I have no idea what I wanted to point out with this blog entry. I guess the clue slipped away, it just “vaporated”.  Wahooo… Ever had that? Hmmm…

Ahum…

Anyway. I know I’m a geek. Aside from writing an entire blog entry about geekness, I’ve just spend my morning learning more about the abilties to comtrol a computer solely with a keyboard. Shorcuts, to perform certain tasks on the computer, to go from the startbar to mozilla firefox, without the use of a mouse. I’ve actually gone from there all the way to this blog website. Somehow I find that stuff neat to do. Buttons are fun, tee-hee. Now I’m sure there are people out there now who actually know all about all these shortcuts already. (I do realize that eventhough I try to keep up with all the development in sci-fi props these days, some things come and go too fast akready for me to comprehend completely.)

This may sound UBER nerdy right now, but I honestly don’t understand and know why I’ve used the mouse for a lot of the stuff I do now with keyboard shortcuts. Seriously.

Maybe it’s nostalgia, or something. Cause I remember one of the first computers I ever controlled myself (I was about 9 or 10) used this system with a blue screen which was I believe called ToolPro or something like that. It was a system similar to Windows, but without the use of a mouse and solely keyboard shortcuts. If I wanted to write a text file or run a game, I used certain shortcuts on the keyboard to access these programs.  Things go a lot faster when you know what buttons to press, instead of having to move your mouse all the way up to a specific spot on the screen.

Wow, I’m rambling… I really need coffee.

You know what I think is cool? Older people who know how to write a text message on a mobile phone. If they have a Facebook account and know how to update their own profile, I think they’re even cooler. Speaking of which, I just received a text message from my 90-year-old grandma this morning. When she was little, she had to write a letter to communicate with her friends. It took ages to get a responce back. Now she can send out a text message and get a responce within a minute. Modern techonogly rocks.

The only thing I haven’t figured out yet, is how to save a new log with just the keyboardshorts. Hope I won’t press a wrong button…. Besides, I need to reply my dad’s Facebook PM. (Again, how cool are older folks online?!)

  1. I just like the valuable info you provide in your articles. I will bookmark your weblog and test again here regularly. I am quite certain I’ll be informed a lot of new stuff right right here! Best of luck for the next!|

  2. I’ve been surfing online more than three hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It is pretty worth enough for me. In my view, if all web owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the net will be a lot more useful than ever before.
